Searching for a low priced, clean and safe room for the night near Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok) – read on…
Synopsis
I travel in and out of Suvarnabhumi airport twice a month for the last 7 months, so I have experienced a range of hotels – the good, bad and the ugly. Below is a short piece on my experiences and opinions on airport hotels in the Suvarnabhumi vicinity.
The Good
1. http://siamairportmotel.com/ Thong Ta Resort
I have been to this Resort twice in the last month; a genuine small Resort (not a condo in
disguise) – close to a parade of nice restaurants, 5 minutes from the bus terminal and airport. friendly staff, clean rooms and one of the lowest prices in the area. Starting from 800Bt+ (inclusive of Breakfast) Email: info@siamairportmotel.com
2. http://www.queensgardenresort.net/ Queen’s Garden Resort
This is also a reasonable priced Hotel/Resort. Right next to a river and a temple this is close to the airport. Restaurant is nicely air conditioned, pool table and big screen TV. Starting from 900Bt+ email: info@queensgardenresort.net
The Bad
1. Convenient Resort
As the name suggest, it is convenient, but this property is extremely sparse. A Condo style Resort, it has barren waste land surrounding it and an open aired small restaurant with is ideal for the tropical insect to feed on you at night. Nearest shop was a 10 minute walk away, you have to firstly run the gauntlet and get pass the stray dogs wondering the road. I found the Hotel drivers to be greedy (wanting tips) and quite unsavory. Rooms were a good size, but I would suggest giving this place a wide berth.
The Ugly
Grand Inn Come
One of the oldest Hotels in the area, looks like a 1970′s construction. Close to the airport, but on a noisy road called King Kaeow. This road houses the main industrial factories in the area, thus the smells and noise are around the clock. I found the staff helpful, and the rooms comfortable (decor was dated). If you walk outside you will see a row of decrepit buildings behind the Hotel in need of a good coat of paint. not a pretty location.
My Recommendations:
If you choose my recommendations I dont think you’ll go far wrong, but, whatever you do – plan your trip. If you dont preplan you can expect the following:
1.
Book at the travel counters at the airport – where they charge in the region of 1800Bt for a 800Bt room (Yes, 1,000Bt profit for a phone call, good work if you can get it!);
2.
Do you trust a taxi driver to help you? Again, they look for their cut, some times in the the region of 600-800Bt profit for taking them to a specific hotel.
For your health, safety and sanity pre-book!.
